Customer Service: Technical Questions

The phone feature ICM needs most often is the one that will forward your calls to our server when your phone line is busy. As a result, you must have your Call Waiting feature disabled when you are on the Internet. To disable Call Waiting, please complete the following steps:

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon on your Windows Desktop.
  • Double-click on the Dial Up Networking folder. For Windows ME users, please select the Control Panel, then Dial-up Networking. For Windows 2000 users, please select the Control Panel, then Network and Dial-up Connections folder.
  • Right-click once on your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) icon. A pop-up menu should appear.
  • In this menu, left-click on Properties.
  • Enter '*70, ' (the comma and the space are important) before the telephone number that is displayed in the Telephone number field. As an example, this number should now read '*70, 555-1234' if 555-1234 is your ISP's dial-up number.
  • Click OK.
  • Connect to the Internet from there and have someone call you to test.

These instructions may not work for all ISPs, but they should for the majority. If you are having any problems configuring your modem to disable Call Waiting, please contact your ISP for help.

For AOL and CompuServe customers:

  • Click Setup on the Sign On screen.
  • Click Expert Setup on the Setup screen.
  • Choose each Connection Number displayed in the Locations Setup window and click on Edit.
  • In the Edit number here: field is the phone number your computer dials to access the Internet. Enter '*70, ' (the comma and the space are important) in front of this number. This field should now read '*70, 555-1234' if 555-1234 is your ISP's dial-up number.
    • If there is a checkbox saying "Dial *70, to disable call waiting," check this box. The complete phone number, as displayed under the heading "Number, exactly as it will be dialed:" should read '*70, 555-1234' if 555-1234 is your ISP's dial-up number.
  • Click OK
  • Connect to the Internet and have someone call you to test.

For free ISP users:

Each free ISP uses their own method for disabling Call Waiting. Some give you the option during installation, while others give you this option from the icon you click to connect to the Internet. For the exact method of disabling Call Waiting for your ISP, please refer to their help files.

About Call Waiting

Call Waiting is the type of feature that is disabled on a per-call basis. Any call for which you dial *70 before the phone number will have Call Waiting disabled, but only for the duration of that call. As soon as you hang up, your Call Waiting will be automatically re-enabled. The instructions above are designed to make your modem dial the *70 for you each time you connect to the Internet.
